• Road hauliers in the Border countie are planning applications for Edinburgh Hawick, English Midlands, London route to meet the new situation arising from th planned closure of the Edinburgh Hawick-Carlisle railway line.

Substantial freight traffic arises fron Galashiels, Hawick and elsewhere within till woollen industry Border counties in Scot land which do a massive world-wide trade it piece goods and knitted garments. There i; also a very big import of raw materials tc the area.

Past efforts to organize overnigh Hawick-London links have been hampere( by BR and have failed.

The new situation makes services vita and efforts are now being made to organiz( routes and to secure licences against thi change. The logical links are through th Scottish Border textile counties into tht English Midland textile counties and then tc London. Hearings are expected in September /October.

The Minister of Transport has alread3 announced his decision to consent to th( British Railways Board proposal tc withdraw all passenger services from tht line—a condition of consent being that ad ditional bus services should be provided The date of the final closure has not yel been announced.
