IN the face of keen competition from Germany, Leyland Motors, Ltd., have secured a contract from the Transvaal Provincial Administration, South Africa, for 205 Leyland 0/350 oil engines of 100 b.h.p. The engines are required as conversion units for fitting in existing American petrol-engined trucks.

This oil-engine conversion pack, based on the Leyland 0/350 engine, was originally marketed in 1954 after road tests by Leyland's research division in Britain with a similar type of American truck to that to be converted in South Africa. Tests revealed that the Leyland oil engine cut fuel consumption by almost half.

Accurate road tests carried out on the truck laden to IT tons gross showed the following average fuel consumptions: Hilly roads: petrol engine, 6.85 m.p.g.; Leyland oil engine, 12.6 m.p.g. Flat routes: Petrol engine. 9.32 m.p.g.; Leyland oil engine. IR m.p.g.

1949 CONVENTION COMING INTO FORCE

THE 1949 Convention on Road Traffic will come into force in the United Kingdom on August 7. It covers driving licences for temporary visitors, documents required for vehicles and drivers going abroad from the United Kingdom, and simplifies the procedure for visiting drivers.

To bring the convention into force the following regulations' have been made: Motor Vehicles (International Circulation) Order, 1957; Motor Vehicles (International Circulation) Regulations, 1957; Motor Vehicles (International Motor Insurance Card) (Amendment) Regulations, 1957, and Motor Vehicles (Driving I.icences) (Amendment) Regulatiobs, 1957.

NEW TRANSPORT USERS' COMMITTEES SELECTED THE new Transport Users' Consultative Committee for the South Western Area was announced by the Ministry of Transport this week. Those appointed will serve until June 30. 1959. They are:— Col. Mark Whitwell (chairman), Mr. B. R Archer and Mr. I. Laity (agriculture). Mr. C. J. Ramey and Mr. G. H. Bedford (industry), Mr. N. E. Harper and Mrs. M. L, Lidington (commerce),. CIR. A. L. Duggan (shipping), Mr. A. S. Dopson and Mr. H. Forrest (labour), Cllr. E. G. Lilley, CIR. F. G. Wilkins, Ald. L. N Punter and CUR. G. F. Thlake (local authorities). Mr. H. E. R..Basrin and Mr. I. R. Patey (British Transport Commission), Mrs. P. Davidson and Mrs. I. Seed (additional members) and Mr. P. H. Sims (secretary). Two further appointments have still to be made for agriculture and industry.

The south-eastern committee will serve until June 30, 1960. It comprises: Mr. Mauriee H. Pugh (chairman). Mr. G. E. Cumming, Mr, L. G. idlitzen and Mr. C. T. Miller (agriculture), Mr. P.
