Ltd., VV Hull, sought to add steel to the B-licence conditions of 10 vehicles last week, it was stated that they were the only hauliers in the Hull area with a mobile crane and pole wagons prepared to undertake work at isolated demolition sites in the East Riding, and to convey the salvaged steel to Sheffield.

Explaining this to the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, Maj. F. S. Eastwood, a representative of Cox and Danks, Ltd., Sheffield, said they supported Barchards' application.

Mr. R. E. Paterson, for the applicants, said four of the vehicles were pole wagons with the conditions "timber within 180 miles of Hull G.P.O."; the other six—three " flats" and three pole wagons—had the conditions "goods for Barchards, Ltd., as required." A new company, Barchards Timber, Ltd., had been formed, with the same directorate and shareholding, and it was desired to have standard conditions for' all the vehicles. This would include goods For the new company and steel for Cox and Danks.

After an assurance on behalf of Cox and Danks that their traffic would be all from the East Riding to Sheffield, and not in the opposite direction, and could not affect British Railways' £10,000 a year account for steel carrying from Sheffield. the British Transport Commission withdrew their objection.

THREE companies operating a joint

Manchester-Blackpool express service have been refused an additional picking-up point at Little Hutton, where four new estates house Salford's overspill population. The applications were by Lancashire United Transport, Ltd., Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., and the North Western Road Car Co., Ltd.

Objectors were Mills and Seddon, Ltd., Farnworth, who told the North Western Traffic Commissioners that it would be the equivalent of granting period returns to Blackpool from Little Hutton because of the unlimited duplication allowed (The Commercial Motor, May 24). Mills and Seddon's application for additional vehicles to Blackpool was also refused.

NEW BY-PASS OPENED THE new Ashford by-pass, which new a serious bottleneck on the London-Dover A20 trunk road, was officially opened last Friday by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Harold Watkinson. The 21-mile stretch of road has twin carriageways, each 24 ft. wide. The scheme was started in 1939 but was closed down during the war. Work carried out since 1955 has cost about £410 000
