Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• French police have found another reason for giving British truck drivers on-the-spot fines. They are now hunting out hazardous goods drivers who do not have specific labelling on their fire extinguishers.

In Britain fire extinguishers are marked with the date they are serviced—but Continental police are claiming the labelling must give the next inspection due date. They are claiming that the dates on British drivers' extinguishers are "out of date".

Middlesex-based fire extinguisher manufacturer Chubb Fire (0932 785588) is helping drivers get round this. It has designed a label which shows when the next inspection is due in order to meet the French requirements.

The latest enforcement move by the French authorities follows the widespread practice by gendarmes to hand out indiscriminate fines for using belly tanks to UK drivers.
