• By the end of the year Ford will be assembling short-wheelbase Transits at the rate of 10,000 a year in Plonsk, Poland. It will spend $54 million setting up the Polish plant which will also produce 20,000 Escort cars a year, but no van versions are planned. About 250 people will be employed on the production lines. Both of the vehicle models will be the latest variants and will include safety features such as air bags.
The Transits will be sent out from Genk as knock down kits and will have diesel engines from Dagenham (which also supplies Southampton). Sourcing of sub-assemblies is still being finalised.
Last year Ford shipped 22,700 vehicles to Eastern Europe and has 300 dealers in the region.
In 1992 Ford opened an ignition coil plant in Hungary and bought a company producing lighting and heater components in the Czech Republic in 1993.
