HEADLIGHT signalling by lorry drivers has been criticised by a Suffolk coroner.

"It seems to me that the exact meaning of any particular signal can sometimes be difficult to interpret," said Mr George Leguen de Lacroix at an inquest on Friday last week into the death of lorry driver Alan Short, of Rushden, Northamptonshire.

Mr Short's lorry collided head-on with another lorry driven by George Berry, of Framlingham, Suffolk on the main Halesworth to Bungay road last September.

Moments before the crash, Mr Short flashed his headlights as he approached a vehicle parked on the nearside verge, Mr Berry told police in a statement.

-Mr Berry's statement indicates that he thought he was being given permission to carry on and pass the vehicle that was parked on his nearside," said the coroner. "But I think it is clear that Mr Short must have been giving a warning that he intended to carry straight on."

Mr Leguen de Lacroix recorded a verdict of accidental death.
