A MOVE to have Tayside Region reject the Government's proposals on privatisation of local authority bus operations has been defeated by the council.

James Doig, Labour's transport spokesman on the council, moved that the council actively support a campaign to eradicate the Government's White Paper proposals on buses and bring forward alternative means.

He said the efficiehcy of Tayside's bus system had been increased over the years and it would now be hard to beat the service.

Supporting him, Councillor Raymond Mennie said the proposals could have dire consequences for many bus routes in the region. He said the council had come out firmly enough against the proposals. There was nothing in the White Paper to be commended.

Transport convener Scott Ferguson moved that the council approve the submission of comments already drawn up on the proposals to the Scottish Development Department.

He said the proposals had not been made into a Bill yet and the council should wait for one to be published before taking the matter further.

There was no point in putting forward absurd amendments. He said he was going with a delegation to the Scottish Office to discuss the proposals.
