Safer loads

INFLATABLE dunnage designed for use in binding part loads in containers and bodywork and called Shorefast is being manufactured by RFD Co. Ltd. The dunnage comprises inflatable envelopes of nylon, heavily proofed with neoprene to ensure resistance to hydro-carbon contamination. It is supplied in several sizes ranging from 2ft square up to 4ft by 8f1, all having an effective inflated thickness of between 6 and 24in.

The units are inflated by compressor or footpump to about 10 p.s.i. through one or two valves according to size. Lifting handles are provided to facilitate carrying and placing in position and there are a number of suspension loops for attaching the bags to freight.

The valves allow speedy inflation and deflation and important features of the equipment are the speed with which it can be applied to the cargo, light weight and compactness for storage.

Indicator holder

AN EXTENDED-COLUMN model has been added to the range of Quickcheck dial-indicator holders. Called the 18in. Heavy-Duty Quickcheck, a fully universal column 18in.-long is mounted on a 2.5in, by 2.5in. by 3in. magnetic base.

Quick fastener

A FASTENER claimed to be of "revolutionary type" with many applications in the transport industry has been announced by the US Expansion Bolt Co. (GB) Ltd. It is called the Mini Tap-It fastener and consists of a mushroom-headed nylon anchor and a drive screw which is ,5,in. long and 4,in. in diameter.

The Mini Tap-It can be used to secure materials with a total thickness of as little as 0.0625in. and is particularly useful when used to secure plastic facing material or any other thin-wall surface. A relatively large head area in contact with the surface gives maximum contact as well as protection to the surface with the minimum of pressure.

The anchor's shank is split into two halves and when the drive screw is tapped home with a hammer through the pilot hole in the head, the two halves of the shank are expanded against the surrounding material if the material is thicker than the depth of the Tap-It. In thin-wall sections, the halves are forced apart into a butterfly position. To remove, the Mini Tap-It is unscrewed like a conventional screw.

Made by: The US Expansion Bolt Co. (GB) Ltd., Polesdon Lane, Ripley, Surrey.

Car transporter trailer

TO MEET the growing demand for a suitable means of transporting new, brokendown and damaged light vehicles over long distances with the minimum amount of labour, Harvey Frost has added to its range of recovery equipment a new car transporter.

Known as the Ern Lake, the trailer is marketed fully equipped and is fitted with a strongly made winch with a gear ratio of 16 to 1 for easy handling and has a 31ft rope fitted with spliced-in thimble. The rope comes off the drum at a serviceable height and runs over rollers to prevent chafing.

Ramps slide straight from the stowage position into slots ready for use and the platforms are decked with expanded steel mesh which provides a clean non-slip surface and facilitates the positioning and anchoring of the wheel chocks. Attached to the tow bar is a telescopic jockey wheel and the rear of the vehicle is equipped with heavy-duty loading stands.

Carrying capacity is 2.25 tons and unladen weight is less than 1 ton. Outside width of the carrying platforms is 6ft and there is 3ft of space between them. Their length is 14ft and overall, the trailer is 7ft Sin, wide and 18ft 2in. long.

Made by: Harvey Frost and Co. Ltd. Dunmow Road, Bishop's Stortford, Herts.
