Manheim Auctions is reaping the benefits of a thriving market. CM visits an auction or two.

The first month of 2004 has pushed turnover up 20% over last year's figures at Manheim Auctions as the used market continues to thrive. National HGV and plant manager Jeremy Martell says the traditional slump in February has showed no signs of setting in.

The auction stock is all fresh to the salesroom floor. The Leeds venue is striding ahead. taking more than £1 m in turnover two weeks ago. And on an overcast Monday last week. Colchester's own HGV and plant sale saw a 70% conversion rate from the 160-strong vehicle line-up.

Lots of choice

There were plenty of 7.5-tonne boxes and curtainsiders in from TLS Rental dating from 2000 and 2001 with V through to Y registrations.Attention centred on those with a little extra like air management kits or tail-lifts, and one which came through with a sleeper cab.The first Iveco Cargo 75E15 of the day, with a day cab, 20ft GRP box body and tail-lift, went under the hammer for £7.900 (ex-VAT).

Away from the 7.5-tonners, bidders competed keenly for several aircraft support vehicles. One in particular, a 2000-plated Iveco Cargo 75E15 with a front and rear loading box on a hydraulic X-frame, sold for £20,100 (ex-VAT).

Two healthy looking 2001 (Y-plate) Renault Premium Privilege 4x2 sleeper-cab tractors with 420DCi engines attracted a lot of demand, finally selling for £16,100 (ex-VAT) and £16,300 (ex-VAT) respectively.

A Daf 85CF 6x2 sleeper on a 2001 Y-plate and with a 430hp engine fetched £18,000 (exVAT), while a Leyland Daf 45 7.5-tonne curtainsider with a Euro-2 150hp engine, sent in by a finance company, sold for £8,450 (ex-VAT).

Container company Exley Transport had a clear-out and offloaded three seven-year-old Scania 6x2 tractors and three 2000-plated Fruehauf tri-axle sliding skeletal trailers.

The units were all on P-plates two P124s, one with a 400hp engine (£8,300 ex-VAT), the other at 360hp (£6.900 ex-VAT), were followed up by a P114 with a 340hp engine (L6,900 ex-VAT). The trailers fetched a top price of £6,300 (ex-VAT).

Binwagons hammered

Martell reported that several dustcarts went under the hammer as well as a Mercedes-Benz Unimog U21150L4x4 with an access platform. And to show that tippers always have a market,a 1994 Mplated Renault Maxter 8x4 tipper with 034011 engine sold provisionally for £4.400 (ex-VAT). •
