It was only 10 years ago that Britain's HGV testing regime was completely overhauled, with the introduction of two test stages and it has changed even since then.
Previousty, drivers were able to go straight to an artic, but now they must take separate tests for rigid and then artic vehicles.
Since 1996, candidates have also had to sit a theory test, and two years ago, a hazard perception test was introduced both have to be passed before sitting the Category C test.
Now, when candidates sit their practical driving HGV tests, they have to answer questions relating to truck maintenance.
With such radical change in the past decade, the Road Haulage Association's Ruth Pott questions whether the truck sect( can take on board yet more changes.
"I can think of any other sector where the EU has changed the training regime sc radically within a 10-year period."
Pott says further change -as propose( by the EC will not be good news for the truck industry, for training companies or for potential HGV drivers. "It will also have huge implications for the Driving Standard Agency," she adds.
