Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

YOUR ARTICLE -Fly tippers are wasters" (CM 5 February) again highlights the need for motor vehicle auctions to restrict sales to preregistered bona fide trade customers only.

The ease with which trailers can be bought at auction, without adequate checks on buyer identity. means that these outlets are an obvious source for those intending to use them for bulk fly-tipping. Allowing cash purchases makes the problem worse as there is little chance of onward traceability if a false name and address are given.

Although auctions are only one stage in the vehicle and trailer remarketing process, making them trade-only would cut down the opportunities for unscrupulous buyers to acquire the means to carry out their despicable activities.

Unfortunately, where determined enough, those with illegal intention will always make tracing them difficult. But, by restricting the outlets for acquisition and tightening up buyer-identity procedures, the auction industry can start to make life more difficult for these criminals.

Everyone recognises that fly tipping trailer loads of waste, especially clinical waste, is not only anti-social,it is also potentially highly dangerous. As a part of the vehicle and trailer remarketing process our industry can and should take the lead in encouraging practices that embrace corporate social responsibility.
