\ Mr. A. J. F. Andrews has been appointed a director and chairman of Weymann's Ltd., Weybridge, Surrey, m succession to Sir Ralf B. Emerson, who wed last month. Mr. Andrews is cram-man of Weymann's parent company, Metropolitan-Cammell Ltd. Mr. W. Scott has relinquished his position as director and secretary of Weymann's to become executive director of Carmel' Laird and Co. Ltd. He is succeeded as secretary by Mr. R. A. May.

Mr. H. Dngdale, transport manager of Smith's Potato Crisps Ltd., has been appointed group transport manager.

Following the previously announced appointment of Mr. S. Eden-Smith as sales director of Atkinson Vehicles Ltd., Preston, Mr. A. T. K. Barnes has assumed responsibility for vehicle sales at Atkinson Vehicles (London) Ltd. He remains deputy general manager.

Mr. J. T. Keohane, district superintendent at the Gravesend depot of the Maidstone and District Motor Services Ltd., has been appointed in the same capacity at Hastings in succession to Mr. A. J. Price, who is leaving the company to become assistant traffic manager of the Trent Motor Traction Co. at Derby.

Mr. W. Young, sales director of Fire stone Tyre and Rubber Co. Ltd., retired last week after 43 years with the company and more than 45 in the tyre industry. The Minister of Transport has appointed Mr. W. G. Harris as director of highway engineering in the Ministry. Mr. Harris, who has been director general of works and chief civil engineer at the Ministry of Public Building and Works since 1963, will succeed Mr. J. F. A. Baker, who is to retire on May 1. Mr. Baker entered the Ministry in 1929 and was appointed to the then new post of director of highway engineering in 1963.

At elections of the Traders Road Transport Association West Midland area last week; the following officers were elected for 1965-66: chairman, Mr. H. Harvey (Normair Tyre Co. Ltd.); deputy chairman, Mr. A. E. Booth (J. Hewitt and Son (Fenton) Ltd.); vice-chairman, Mr. D. Boston (Birkett and Roberts Ltd.); Mr. J. Hood (Adams Butter Ltd.).

At the annual general meeting of the Edinburgh and District Tipper Operators' Association, Mr, Tom Blailde was elected chairman. with Mr. B. P. Mullen as vicechairman. The committee is formed by Mr. Baxter, Mr. Wright, Mr. Cockburn, Mr. Gullies, Mr. Pratt, Mr. Pettigrew and Mr. N. Smith. Mr. T. A. Moffat remains the secretary.

Mr. Samuel Newton has been appointed managing director of Gilbraith Commercials Ltd., Accrington, LeylandAlbion-Scammell distributors. Mr. Newton was with Albion Motors Ltd. from 1945 to 1960 at their Manchester depot.

Obituary

regret to record the deaths of VV Mr. G. H. flown, Mr. Ralph Chivers, Mr. T. Knox Paterson and Mr. W. Elkin Platt Mr. Rown was managing director of G. H. Down and Sons Ltd., of Bridgwater, Somerset, which was founded more than 50 years ago. He started the business with a horse and cart, and in 1944, with his two sons, formed a limited company which is now one of the largest of its kind in the south-west.

Mr. Chivers was a well-known figure in the road transport industry, having been chairman of the Devizes and Central Wilts sub-area of the Road Haulage Association for many years up to 1963, and was recently nominated to return to the chair of that sub-area in the ensuing year. In addition he was their delegate to the Western area committee of the R.H.A., and the rOad/rail negotiating committees, which often met in Swindon. He was also interested in the retail coal industry, being vice-chairman of the Wiltshire county committee of the Coal Merchants' Federation.

Mr. Paterson was joint chairman of John Paterson (Motors) Ltd., transport contractors and car hirers of Glasgow.

Mr. Platt, who was 72, and a specialist in company law, had been on the board of Oldham and Son Ltd., of Denton, Manchester, since November, 1949. He played a large part in the formation of the company's subsidiary in France,
