AN unlicensed workers' service to the factory of A. V. Roe and Co., Ltd., Woodford, Cheshire, had contributed to the suspension of a licensed service operated by the North Western Road Car Co., Ltd.

This was alleged at Stockport magistrates' court last week, when the operator of the " pirate " service, James Arthur Smith, Biddulph, was fined a total of £25 on charges of using a coach and a small bus without a road service licence. He was also ordered to pay £7 7s. advocate's fee and £3 2s. expenses of witnesses. The driver of the small bus was also fined E5 because he did not hold a public service vehicle driving licence.

For the North Western concern, who prosecuted, Mr. D. I. R. Turner said that Smith worked at the factory. Approaches had been made for an established company to operate the service, which started when a licence was granted. The service established by North Western-had since been withdrawn because it was uneconomic.

INDUSTRIAL BOARD CONSIDER SHORTER WEEK

THE effect on bus operators in Yorkshire of a shorter working week in industry has been considered by the East and West Ridings Regional Board for Industry. At a meeting last week the board suggested that industries contemplating shorter working hours should confer with transport undertakings.

The Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners had pointed out that half an hour off the working day might mean that there would be thousands of factory workers waiting for buses before operators had taken schoolchildren home.

The board agreed to urge local sections of industry to .consult transport undertakings when considering plans for a shorter week.

ORIGINAL TERMINUS DEMANDED

EIGHT bus companies in Shetland serving rural districts have asked Lerwick Corporation to return them to their original terminus on the sea front. Four years ago, when harbour work began, the operators moved to a new site provided by the council on the understanding that they would return to their old centre. They now found this was to be given to other operators.

• The eight companies have told the council that the replacement terminus was unsatisfactory as it was away from the main shopping centre.

" MOUNTAINEERING " GRANT A PPLICATIONS by Sheffield United -c—s. Tours, Ltd., to operate two new "

mountaineering" and " outdoor " excursions have been granted by the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners. The company will take city dwellers to the Lake District and North Wales at week-ends.
