DEC1SIONS on fares applications by three major South Wales undertakings will have to wait until the Minister of Transport decides an appeal by local authorities against the approval of fares increases. These were granted to the Western Welsh Omnibus Co., Ltd., and the South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., in December, 1959. •

This was stated when applications by Red and White Services, Ltd., the Rhondda Transport Co., Ltd., and Neath and Cardiff Luxury Coaches, Ltd., to the South Wales Traffic Commissioners were adjourned at Cardiff last week.

The applicant companies sought to bring their fares into line with the other _ operators, but Mr. Alun T. Davies, for the local authorities, who objected, maintained that it was not right to decide until the result of the pending appeal was known.

Opposing the proposed adjournment, Mr. F. A. Stockdale, for the applicants, said that the companies would suffer financially if they were unable to implement grants made to them. If the grants were implemented on routes where there was joint operation, chaos would result.

On Monday the South Wales Transport Co. were strongly criticized for announcing that fares increases granted in December would be implemented from next Sunday.

Mr. Geoffrey Hockin, solicitor-clerk to 40 local authorities, said that they had hoped the increases would not be put into effect until after the appeal which they had lodged had been heard.

The local authorities are anxious to secure a uniform fares structure in South Wales and it would appear that the action of the South Wales company will disrupt the unity which had hitherto been enjoyed," he declared.

If the company are increasing fares on routes in common with other bus operators, and this certainly looks like it, then a most undesirable and chaotic state of affairs will ensue," Mr. Hockin added.

A Meeting of local authorities was due to be held in Cardiff yesterday to discuss the matter.

A spokesman of the South Wales Transport Co. said that the increases had not been implemented earlier because complications had arisen. The decision to put them into effect was made when it became known that applications by other companies had been adjourned.
