SCARBOROUGH Corporation's proposal to close the Valley Road coach park was criticized at a public meeting -in Scarborough last week. It was agreed unanimously that the corporation should be asked to review its decision and that Aid. A. Shields should be asked again to put forward his scheme for a coach passenger reception station at the seaward end of Valley Road.

The corporation intend, after the closure of Valley Road park, to re-route coaches to the William Street and Burniston Road parks at the other side of the town. Speakers stressed the continuing reduction of coaches visiting the resort. In 1948 it was 15,760 compared with 7,594 in 1959.

Car. W. C. Wilkinson pointed out that conditions were different in 1948. Petrol was rationed, he said, people were not able to visit the seaside and there were no train trips. While some 640,000 may have visited Scarborough in 1948 by coach, the number in 1959 was more than 800,000 by coach and rail, excluding those who went by car. Mr. A. Belt, chairman of the meeting, said that while coaches going to Scarborough were on the decline, the number going to Bridlington increased in the past two years by 1,700. Coach traffic to Whitby had also increased by some 240 vehicles.
