E'XPENDITURE an roads in England and Wales totalled £121.6m. in the year ended March 31 last. The figure for the previous year was £109m.

In a road report presented to Parliament last week, it was stated that £21.2m. was spent on trunk roads and £100.5m. on other roads. During the year under review, in addition to the five special road schemes (motorways) authorized by the Minister of Transport, work on 207 trunk road schemes, costing £15.5m., was authorized.

Maintenance and minor improvement works included the resurfacing of 523 miles of road and the surface dressing of 619 miles, at a cost of .£10.7m, Constructional work authorized, exclusive of land, amounted to £46.7m.

Work on the reconstruction or strengthening of 19 bridges to accept abnormal indivisible loads is in hand. Approximately 100 -loads of more than 150 tons gross weight or 20-ft. width were moved during the year under review. It was stated that 8.307.118 substantive and 4.325.674 provisional driving licences were issued.

EXETER HAULIERS PRESS APPEAL OVER DEPOT

A DECISION by Exeter magistrates PA forbidding Blidleigh Transport, Ltd., Looe Road, Exeter, to carry out maintenance work at a depot in Bonhay Road. is to be contested. The company have lodged an appeal which will be heard within the next week or so.

The ban was first imposed by the corporation, who claimed that since Budleigh Transport took over the premises noisy operations had become common (The Commercial Motor, December 5). The company asked the magistrates to rescind the order, but their case was dismissed. Now the dispute is to go to Quarter Sessions.
