Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BECAUSE of frequent re-routeing in newly developed areas of Hartlepool. bus drivers of United Automobile Services, Ltd., were often uncertain of their correct route and had occasionally gone the wrong way, the Northern Traffic Commissioners were told last week. Passengers were also confused by the alterations, said Mr. D. S. Deacon, traffic manager.

To clarify the situation, the company. in collaboration with Hartlepool Corporation, had evolved a new stage route which they wanted to operate.

The application was opposed by West Hartlepool Corporation.

Mr. Deacon stressed that the company had no intention of taking traffic from West Hartlepool buses operating in the same area. The route had been designed to offer the best overall services to new estates, For West Hartlepool, Mr. M. D. Abrams submitted that the mileage and frequency would be increased, so more revenue would be required. This could be obtained onlv at the expense of West Hartlepbol's traffic.

Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, chairman, said decision would be reserved until details of the conflicting services could tie more thoroughly examined.

BY-PASS TAKING SHAPE

THE western section of the Northwich (Cheshire) by-pass has now been opened to traffic. Costing £183,000, this

stretch of road was started in November, 1956. It links up with the central section of the by-pass, which was completed before the war, and work is to start shortly on the two-mile eastern section.

The by-pass is one of four schemes designed to do away with the bottleneck at Northwich. When it is completed there will be seven mites of dual carriageway taking the Chester-Manchester trunk road south-east of Northwich.
