AT a sitting of the North Western Licensing Authority at Blackpool, last week, Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., received permission to introduce a revised scale of charges. For the concern, Mr. W. Black hurst said that this third application for higher fares was called for because since the last application was made earlier this year, the company's costs had gone up by /291,972 a year. On services worked by Ribble and joint operators in the North Western Traffic Area, therefore, fares between Id. and 24d. will now cost id. more, and those over 3d. will rise by Id., although to offset the effect of the increases, certain return tickets will be made available which will be equivalent to twice the old single rate. Application has now been made by Ribble and its joint operators for similar revisions of charges in the Northern Traffic Area. United Automobile Services, Ltd., has also lodged a new application for fares modifications affecting 240 services. It is proposed that all existing ordinary single tickets of 6id. and upwards, carrying an odd id. shall go up by id., and that all ordinary return fares from 6d. upwards shall rise by id. to 6d., and odd id. units shall be deleted. Increases of 2id. to 10d. are proposed for workmen's single fares, and of 4d. to 2s. for workmen's returns. Revisions of multiple-journey and contract tickets are also proposed. Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Joint Transport Board also proposes new fare scales. In this case it is suggested that 2d. single tickets should cost id. more, that fares from 3d. to 6id. bearing an odd id. should go up by id., whilst even fares should go up by Id. Above this figure, increases of Id. and lid. are suggested for even and odd fares respectively. Services operated jointly with five other undertakings are also included in the application, the total number of services affected being 31. Operators with joint -working arrangements with North Western Road carLtd., are also applying permission rmission to bring charges into line with those proposed by the North Western concern. Huddersfield Joint Omnibus Committee has applied for permission to withdraw workmen's return fares on services worked by motorbuses. Trolleybus fares are unaffected. Cheap return tickets under present arrangements are available on motorbuses up to 9 a.m.
