This opinion was expressed by Sir Cyril Birtchnell, K.C.M.G., C.B., Deputy Secretary (Inland Transport), Ministry nf Transport, 'and leader of the British delegation to the world road transport conference, which opened at Geneva on Tuesday. He was speaking at a Press conference shortly before his departure for Geneva.

. Discussing the draft convention (dealt with in "The Commercial Motor "last week), Sir Cyril made it clear that special dispensations were unlikely to be granted to enable large foreign vehicles to come to Britain. Vehicles from overseas could enter this country only if they complied with existing legislation.

"The Commercial Motor" has been assured, however, that any operator wishing to send vehicles abroad may, in the event of difficulty, obtain assistance from the Ministry of Transport.

MUD MUST BE REMOVED

PAA NEW by-law has been enacted in Shropshire which makes it illegal to ur. vehicles on the road without first cleaning off mud, clay and other matter that might otherwise fall on to the road. The Traders Road Transport Association states that similar by-laws exist in other parts of the country.

BIG LOAN FOR FIAT

WITH a. new loan of 5,144,000 VI' dollars, the Fiat Co., of Turin, is receiving 19,644,000 dollars from E.C.A., as well as a loan of 5,800,000 dollars from the Export-Import Bank.
