West Hartlepool Corporation tried to sell four 14-year-old double-deck buses, but as the offers received were not considered satisfactory, the cost of making the vehicles roadworthy is to be investigated WITH the general adoption of wideVV base wheels by American manufacturers since the war, there has, been a tendency in Britain to mount tyres on standard-type wheels of greater base widt:i. The example may be quoted of the 9.00 by 20-in. tyre which was originally permissible fitting on a 5.00 by 20-in., rim and is now fitted to a 6.00 by 20-in. wheel. The revision was approved by the Tyre and Rim Association, largely as the result of representations by the wheel companies.

The demand for a range of wheels specifically for wide-base fittings has been met by Joseph Sankey and Sons, Ltd., Wellington, Shropshire, with the recent introduction of a commercialvehicle pressed-steel wheel which •has been designed for this kind of mounting. Taking the same example of the 9.00 by 20-in, tyre, the appropriate wide-base wheel has a 7.0 by 20-In. rim, "7.0" being quoted as the dimensional figure in place of "7.00" to indicate the wheel type.

The use of wide-base wheels increases the tyre resistance to side thrust for a given inflation pressure, with a consequent improvement in cornering power. Alternatively, lower inflation pressures may be employed without sacrificing the road-holding capabilities of the vehicle. Economically, the new wheel represents a saving, as it enables the combined cost of the wheel and tyre to be reduced.
