Triplex Lead Against A N interesting new use for Smash and Grab .4-1safety glass, which may Raiders interest those of our readers who stage fairly valuable displays in the windows of their premises, is a new "burglar proof" laminated glass produced by the Triplex concern. It comprises two sheets of glass with an inter-layer of polyvinyl butyral, the thickness of the plastic being nearly three times that of the ordinary laminated safety glass used by the motor industry. It is so strong that it can withstand the impact of an 8-oz, steel ball dropped on to it from a height of 50-80 ft., whereas ordinary safety glass is required by the British Standards Institution to withstand the impact from such a ball dropped from a height of only 12 ft. There is no interference with the 'transparency and, of course, the visibility is unaffected by the protective devices commonly employed. In twenty tests a 5-lb. brick was hurled against a window of this type and, although the glass splintered, it did not collapse.

Bendix introduces THE well-known Bendix Simple Form of Power 1 Products Division of the

Steering Bendix Aviation Corporation

has developed a new selfcontained power steering gear of the worm-and-nut type combined with a hydraulic cylinder and control valve. The power cylinder is built into the main housing, both it and the control valve being concentric with the steering column. Control of the valve is effected through the worm and nut gear, but this serves also as a safety device by which the steering can be kept under control in the event of the hydraulic system being damaged or of its failing through some defect. The valve takes the form of a spool which opens or blocks the various ports through which the oil 'is passed to or from the required ends of the cylinder. The action is claimed to be almost. instantaneous. As part of the system Bendix also offers a-gear-type pump of high efficiency and stout construction. in this is incorporated a relief valve. Courteous . . . commercial vehicle drivers.

The town lies on a long route much used by large haulage vehicles, the drivers of which often have to break their journeys to sleep on the way. The police authorities at this town decided to make them really welcome, and about 18 months ago the chief of this department began a programme of courtesy and co-operation with the drivers passing through. He has allocated areas for parking, provided all-night police .protection for the drivers and their loads, and even instituted a special " call " service. Tickets are supplied to the drivers, who indicate the time at whin they wish to be awakened. These tickets are handed over to the officers on duty or hung on the vehicles, and at the required times the police patrol car arrives to rouse the men, who frequently sleep in their cabs. In the event of the vehicle parks, being full, trucks are allowed to park in certain side streets, but here, too, the patrols keep watch on them. It is reported that since this system was instituted, the police have not had one breakage

of traffic regulations by truck drivers, and the town benefits, for the men spend a good deal of money there. Perhaps the next development will., be tea in bed—brought by the sergeant.

IN future, operators of motorbuses and trolleybuses will have to pay particular care to

their. arrangements for the control of the garaging of vehicles at their depots. The London Transport Executive recently had dismissed an appeal by it from an award of a considerable sum to a depot employee who was crushed between two trolleybuses. It appears that the practiceat the depot in question was for a trolleybus to come up to the man concerned while he was standing between two vehicles, and to stop within 6-8 ft from him, but the accident showed the danger of this procedure. The chairman of the Court of Appeal said th.at if a fatality had occurred, someone might have been charged with manslaughter, and he hoped notice would be taken of this warning.
