A Novel Scheme T NT a novel scheme for the for Lighting Main 'lighting of highways, it is Thoroughfares . • suggested that the supply cables should be supported on high posts erected on both sides of the carriageway, whilst the lamps would be suspended centrally above it at a height of 33 ft. with an average spacing of 130 ft. An alternative suggestion is for two rows of lamps in staggered formation. It is believed that the use of overhead cables for carrying the necessary current would reduce the cost of installation and that of maintenance.

Making Berlin Fit for THE plan for the reconstruc

Traffic Needs of the lion of the central area of Future Berlin should act as an incentive to our road-planning authorities in connection with the improvement of London's traffic facilities. A new road is to be constructed through the central area from north to south ; it will have vehicular subways and will intersect a second through road. Both will be continued outwards to A26

meet four concentric roads and will ultimately intersect the orbital road, thus giving direct communication with the Autobahnen. The first two main roads will have lengths of 24 and 31 miles, respectively. Much of the land necessary will become available by replanning the railways in -the central area. Some existing stations will be demolished and there will be only two main termini. There will be extensive parking accommodation and numerous planted areas. Road width will be based on the estimated needs of future traffic.

The Growing Value TN virtue of -the Charter and Authority of the 'recently granted to the

I.A.E Institution of Automobile

Engineers, that body has now received official notification from the Passport Office that honorary members and associate members of the Institution are authorized to countersign British passport declarations. This is one more useful service added to the many which are given by the Institution or afforded to its members. An Example of Faith AST week we referred to Set by Four Haulage Lithe interesting arrangement Concerns made between four large haul

age concerns in respect of canvassing and quoting for traffic. The importance of the agreement lies in the free hand given by each carrier to the others, and it shows an excellent spirit of confidence that the agreement as to minimum rates will not be broken. In our view, it is a considerable step forward in the internal organization on the goods-transport side.

Members of the Press A BOUT a year ago a large Visit the German 1-1party of Members of Parlia

Roads ment, County Surveyors, etc.,

numbering about 224, was invited to visit the German Autobahnen, but, in this case, the Press representation consisted of only a few editors of technical journals. This week, however, a much smaller party, consisting of editors and motoring correspondents, mainly of the daily Press, with a few members of the transport Press, has paid

a short visit, covering, however, quite a lot of ground by private car. We hope that this will have some effect in encouraging the Press concerned to urge the need for better roads for Britain.

Oil Filtration EnrrO dispel from operators' courages Use of Good 1 minds die-hard doubts as to Lubricant the practicability of purifying

lubricant that has served its time in the crankcase of an engine, is one of the greatest difficulties besetting those who specialize in the sale of oil-reconditioning apparatus. Proof, however, that the process is satisfactory and economic is fairly conclusive and the theory that the " nature" or the " goodness " of the oil is destroyed by service has now been shown convincingly to be groundless. In engines with high oil consumption, there is little object in draining out and filtering the lubricant, but, in other cases, it is definitely a sound proposition. Moreover, the practice of oil purification encourages the employment of good-quality and, consequently, more expensive lubricants, which pays in the long run.
