Remunerative Results Attend the Working of the Corporation's Fleet of Motorbuses for the Past Year.

m HE operation of a fleet. of motorbuses 11.1. by the Cardiff City Council under powers conferred on it in 1920 has been sufficiently successful to warrant additions being made to the fleet and the opening of new routes annually since the inception of the service in December, 1920. Furthermore, the council's tramways manager, M. R. L. Horsfield, has felt justified in recommending the council to continue its policy of expanding the bus services.

Many details of the operation of the council's buses are given in the annual report for the year ended March 31st,

which has just been issued. The accounts are solely concerned with the operation of the 23 buses which were in service 'during the period covered by the report, and this fleet was made up of 11 singledeckers (five being of the one-man-controlled type) and 12 double-deckers, It may be said here, as a matter apart from the report,'that the fleet at present owned by the council consists of 33 buses, 18 of which are of the double-decker pattern.

The statement of accounts for the year shows that the income from the buses amounted to £42,466, whereas the work

ing expenses totalled £29,127, the balance of £13,339 being carried to the net revenue account. Since the buses covered 526,496 miles, the average re, ceipts per mile are shown to be 19.36d., whilst the average working expenses per mile totalled 13.28d., leaving a balance of 6.08d.

Under the main heading of expenditure, we find that traffic expenses sorbed £14,497, general repairs and maintenance £11,287, general expenses £2,812.

The charges in respect of capital expenditure on loans not yet permanently raised amounted to £5,990, an increase of £2,725, as compared with the previous year. A sum of £6,828 has teen allocated to the appropriation account.

New vehicles acquired during the year covered by the report involved an expenditure of £9,849, bringing the total of the capital expenditure account to £42,560.

The number of passengers carried on the buses during the year represented +01 Increase of 1,477,117 as compared with the previous year's total, the actual number being 3,400,646. The net profit on the undertaking, after making the various adjustments, was £51.68, and this sum has been carried forward.

Bus Travel Popular in Sumatra.

The motor vehicle has now become the chief means of travel.in Sumatra, where the roads are kept in an excellent condition and are a credit to the Dutch road engineers. Although the demand for lorries is slow at the moment, the increase in the uie of motorbuses is very marked. It is estimated that during the last two, years about 600 motorbuses have been put into service in Northern Sumatra alone.
