• Beanie's 12-litre Euro-2 and Euro-3 engines differ little in overall layout, but there are significant changes in the way they deliver their power. Both are straight-six unit-injected engines with identical cylinder dimensions, but the Euro-3 DC12 uses higher injection pressures and a different control system from its DS012 predecessor.
The newer engine delivers fractionally more peak torque (2,000Nm rather than 1,950lint) but its torque plateau is shorter. The later engine is also said by Scania to have slightly worse peak fuel efficiency. However, the Euro-3 unit's green band is set lower in the rev range, running from 1,000-1,600rpm rather than 1100-1,706mm. The upshot is that it pays to drive the more modern vehicle at slightly lower revs, and the boost in peak torque lets you dose.
