III .1s, the weather slowly improves, the number of roadworks on Britain's 2,400km (1,500 miles) of 'motorway is also increasing. The following schemes could cause delays and should be borne in mind when route planning. CM'S roadworks report is compiled in conjunction with the Department of Transport and the AA Roadwatch Unit.

• M1 Northamptonshire. Junction 16 (Northampton) remains closed with a contraflow system operating for a distance of approximately 4.8km (3 miles). All traffic uses the northbound carriageway. Short sections of the outside overtaking lanes on the northbound and southbound carriageways will also be closed for short periods for emergency barrier repair work. Delays expected.

• M1 Greater London. Between Junctions 1 and 2 there will be various lane closures on the northbound carriageway for a distance of 0.8km (0.5 miles) for concrete slab repairs. Work will be completed by 15.30 each day although moderate delays may occur up till then.

• M25. Between Junction 18 (Hunton Bridge) until May 18 the eastbound carriageway will be closed and a contraflow scheme will operate on the middle and outside overtaking lanes of the westbound carriageway. Southbound traffic will also use the hardshoulder as a running lane.

• M3 Hants. At Junction 8 (Andover/A303). The southbound carriageway is closed for a distance of 20km (12.5 miles) until May 22. Traffic will be diverted on to the A33 at Junction 7 (Basingstoke), and will rejoin the M3 at Bat End. • M40 Oxfordshire.

Between Junctions 5 and 7 (Stokenchurch and Thame) until May 12, left and righthand carriageways will be affected by closures.

• M2 Kent At Junctions 7 and 8 (Faversham and Canterbury) the slip road to the northbound carraigeway will be closed. Diversion will operate via the A2 and A251. Outside lane on both carriageways also closed.

• M20 Kent. Between Junctions 1 and 2 (M25 interchange and A20) westbound, patching work until further notice. Only one lane open.

• M56 Cheshire. Between Junctions 6 and 9 (Manchester Airport and Lymrn) eastbound carriageway restricted to one lane. Contraflow scheme also operates on the westbound carriageway middle and outside lanes. Closures cover a distance of some 7km (4.3 miles), and are for major repairs. Delays expected.

• M6 Lancs. At Junction 32 (Preston/Garstang), the southbound carriageway will be closed except for the hardshoulder which will act as the running lane. The third lane on the northbound carriageway will be used in a contraflow system for southbound traffic. Delays expected at weekends.

• M5 Hereford and Worcester. Between Junctions 5 and 6 (Droitwich and Evesham/Worcester), the southbound carriageway will be closed. Contraflow scheme operating on northbound lanes. Severe delays expected, particularly at peak times. The northbound entry slip road will also be closed at Junction 5 until May 24, and the southbound entry until June.
