would be greatly reduced if the Government introduced compulsory separate registration of trailers, as is required in most EU countries. But according to a Department of Transport letter written in reply to an enquiry from the Commercial Trailer Association, the Government has no plans to introduce such a scheme. "This would be costly to operate and administer for both operators and the DVLA, with no obvious benefits in terms of road safety and revenue raising," says the DOT. "The Government could not, therefore, endorse a requirement for trailers to be registered through the DVLA record."
