Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Dynamo and Battery are now Called Upon to Supply Current for a Wide Variety of Services

EVERY year seems to add to the number of purposes to which electricity is put on commercial vehicles, particularly the more luxurious types, such as the modern touring coach. All this calls for increased output from the dynamo as well as reliable batteries of large storage capacity. The engine may be the heart of the vehicle, but the electrical equipment is its ner

vous system. Now, in addition to what may be termed standard fittings we have radio sets, defrosters, and a large number of lamps—interior, fog, reversing, etc., apart from the normal equipment.

Much of the efficiency of spark-ignition engines depends upon the selection of the sparking plugs. What will suit one engine will not do for another, and the plug makers should always be consulted. Amongst the best-known makes are the AC-Sphinx, Bosch, Champion, E.R., Hobson, K.L.G., Lissen, Lodge and Massa. Special heater plugs for oil engines are the Bern, C.A.V.-Bosch, ER., K.L.G., Lodge and Scintilla.

The dynamo, being the source of energy, is a component of great value and remarkably efficient for its size. The leading makes are the Bosch, C.A.V.-Bosch, Delco-Remy, Lucas, Scintilla and Simms.

Perhaps the next item in importance is the battery, which must be thoroughly reliable, of aMple capacity and long-wearing life. Modern batteries possess these characteristics to c40 a marked degree. Well-known makes are the Alklum, Dagenite, D.P., Exide, Fuller, Lithanode, Lucas, Nile (Batteries, Ltd.), Oldham, Tudor, Tungstone and Young.

The employment of larger engines, and particularly oil engines, necessitates the use of more powerful starting equipment, some of those for the oilers utilizing 24 volts. They are produced by the same makers as are the dynamos, with the addition of Messrs. A. J. Salisbury.

Ignition apparatus, comprising coil or magneto, or both, have their respecfive followers, magnetos being now more used than for some time past. Well-known makes of either or both types are the B.T.H., C.A.V.-Bosch, Delco-Remy, Lucas, Simms and Scintilla.

The number of makes of electrically operated fuel pumps is increasing slowly. There are now the Autopulse (Papelian) and S.U.

An electric windscreen wiper is a most valuable auxiliary. There are the Berkshire (Houdaille) and a defroster of the same make, the C.A.V.Bosch, Desmo, Lucas and Klaxon.

Fog lamps and other special. types arc of particular value in the autumn. Amongst the best-known are the Bosch, C.A.V.-Bosch, Cooper-Stewart, Lucas, Notek (Equipment and Engineering), Safebeam (Desmo), Simms, Smith's and Sparton (Desiderio). A useful nonbreakable form of side and tail lamp is the Rubbolite (Flexible Lamps).

Horns and other audible warning devices include Bosch, Clear-Hooters, Desmo, Klaxon and Smith's.'

Amongst the indicating signals are the C.A.V.-Bosch, Desmo, Lucas, Klaxon, Safetisigns (Hunts), and Smith's.

. Even speedometers are now some times driven electrically. Examples are the B.T.H. and Smith's. An allied device is the Cooper-Warner (CooperStewart), which warns the driver when the speed reaches 30 mph.

" Other electrical devices are the A.C. gauge for petrol, the Hobson electrical Telegages for temperature, oil pressure, petrol level, etc., and the Parrish switch (Autowire) used with fuel tankers, etc. There is also available a fairly wide selection of electrical testing apparatus.
