Merritt (representing the railway company, which objected to an application by Coun. C. W. Hewson, of Immingham, for the renewal of a B licence) resulted in Mr. Stirk refusing to continue the hearing that day, or on the next, as arranged.

The case was one, that had been the subject of two previous hearings, when considerable feeling was exhibited. At the third hearing, in a tense atmosphere, Mr. T. J. Lewis, for the applicant, made several protests against the manner in which Mr. Merritt was conducting his case.

Finally, after 21-hours' crossexamination of Mr. Hewson, Mr. Merritt registered a protest that the Licensing Authority had been exchanging smiles with the applicant's solicitor. Mr. Stick said that in the course of about 700 sittings he had never met with such discourtesy. He adjourned the hearing.

N.Z. Roads to be Nationalized.

The nationalization of 4,000 miles of the main highways, in order to unify the system of control and to eliminate railway level-crossings, is to be carried out in New Zealand. It is hoped to complete the abolition of crossings in two years.

S.T.R. at Building Exhibition, On Monday afternoon (September 28), S.T.R., The Commercial Motor costs expert, is to lecture to members of the Ballast, Sand and Allied Trades Association, at their annual meeting. The address, entitled " Haulage Costs in the Sand and Ballast Industry," will be delivered at Olympia, London, where the Building Exhibition is being held.

Transport Workers Appeal to Ministry.

At a meeting of commercial-vehicle drivers at Grays, it was decided to appeal to the Ministry of Transport, asking that Thurrock Urban District Council should take immediate steps to render certain roads in the Grays area safe for traffic. It was asserted that, in some instances, road cambers are so steep that heavy vehicles are constantly in danger; in Grays High Street, for example, the centre of the read is 18 ins, higher than the edges.
