APARTICULARLY interesting point raised in the paper read by Mr. W. H. Gaunt before the National Transport Conference on Wednesday was the hindering of the work of delivery, distribution and commercial calling by the absence or casual variation of the name boards which should be found at each side of all junctions between streets and road.

Even in a district under the same municipal authority there is often little uniformity in the lettering and style utilized. Names are frequently omitted altogether, or are so far away from the point of the junction as to be illegible and, therefore, of no help to a driver. Alteration to property adjoining corners often means a complete change in the position of a board, and although the local authority has power to cause the namebe exhibited on any property in or near the horoughfare, it does not insist upon a place being provided upon which the name can be placed, nor has any Government Department the power to enforce this duty.

Glasgow and, perhaps, one or two other towns are notable exceptions to this indictment.

The result is that drivers are aptto " flounder about," pull up suddenly, reverse and, in general, make themselves a nuisance, resulting in possible danger and loss of time, which, with proper organization on the part of municipalities, could be avoided. As Mr. Gaunt mentions, this suggestion may mean an Act of Parliament, so that the Minister can be equipped with power to compel the authorities to name each junction properly with uniform boards not more than a limited distance from the connection, and at about a uniform height.
