EDDIE STOBART AND Unite were set to return to the negotiating table as CM went to press, against the backdrop of a 72-hour strike scheduled for the end of the month.

Last week (19 October) Unite rejected an improved severance deal for the 183 Eddie Stobart drivers facing redundancy at Tesco’s Doncaster DC.

Eddie Stobart MD David Pickering said: “We are disappointed with Unite’s decision again and are starting to question its strategy in these discussions. Our enhanced package was worth an additional £1m. We increased the redundancy pay offer by 28%, offered additional pay in lieu of notice and significant financial support for drivers taking up the hundreds of alternative roles [offered].” CM understands that drivers who had initially been offered statutory redundancy pay, £430 a week per year worked (capped), were subsequently offered about £550 a week instead. Unite, which has notified Stobart of further strike action starting on 31 October, said the offer didn’t go far enough. It maintains the jobs on offer are inappropriate. A union spokeswoman said: “If it can’t give them jobs, it should at least give them a decent severance package.” Tesco outsourced the transport function at Doncaster to Stobart in August. The operator wants to use vehicles from elsewhere in its network to meet the DC’s requirements.
