II Residents in the County Tyrone area of Northern Ireland are feeling the effects of the huge diesel laundering rackets that have threatened the survival of many garages in the province.
Several tonnes of the toxic chemicals used to remove red dye from rebated fuel have been found dumped in ditches and besides streams in the past few weeks.
Some chemicals, mostly acids, have already leaked and the local council has been forced to launch a clean-up operation. Local garages have also reported an up-turn in business repairing diesel engines of those who have bought the "cheaper fuel".
Removing the dye leaves a residue of acid in the laundered diesel which can damage injectors and pumps.
