Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The trade associations, the government and the unions are displaying a rare united front this week with a last-ditch campaign to overturn potentially "disastrous" Euro legislation on working time.

This follows a special meeting On Monday of the Road Haulage Forum attended by the Road Haulage and Freight Transport Associations, the Transport & General Workers Union and three government ministers, including Transport Minister John Spellar, to prepare its joint response to the Working Time Directive.

The European Parliament wants night working limited to eight hours with no day shifts starting before 05:00hrs.

Everyone at the forum agreed to press for a 10-hour limit to night shifts with a flexible approach to early starts. They will now be lobbying MEPs and EU Commissioners to gain support for these changes.

However a T&G spokesman adds a note of caution to its support: We remain committed to the principle of eight hours night work, but provided there's a voluntary approach we will look at the possibility of anytting up to 10 hours."

The directive will now pass through a conciliation process, with a final version due within four weeks.
