Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Based on a large industrial estate on the edge of this former g arrison town, it has been hit several times recently. Security r insures included lockable gates and a steel fence, but being on a n elevated plot surrounded by dense foliage and close to a busy rain road made it extremely vulnerable.

Twice thieves drove trucks through the fence and removed I irst J30.000 and then 120.000 worth of wheels from trucks parked up t n the site.

After the second visit, Andover Trailers' insurance company told ii he company, that's enough; re-assess your risk and install a letter security system.

"We had to do it to stay in business." says managing direci or lim Wright. "The insurance companies had effectively 'blacked' cur corner of the industrial estate. "It was a triple whammy," he explains. "A costly break-in, an injunction from Test Valley t ouncil barring us from removing shrubs and trees and an insurer iaeming us uninsurable."

With the immediate problems sorted, AT carried out its risk assessment and with the insurance company approval, spent 2,120,000 on Rhino security bollards and Initial's remotely moni1ored Siteminder CCTV system.

It was clearly money well spent because when thieves called at he AT site recently, the system worked and the intruders were laught in the act, on the premises.

Looking back, Wright is convinced that monitored cameras are vital to good site security. But the system really hinges on getting a fast response from the service provider—and from lhe local police.

"The way that profit margins are these days, workshops can't Afford to have expensive equipment removed," says Wright. "Of murse. businesses can't run without insurance so you may as I veil go for an effective package."

But don't become complacent. he warns. Remember that you I:an still be vulnerable during the day so get your staff in the habit of asking strangers why they are there and what their business is. It's one thing getting the villains into court and seeing them get '.heir just desserts but they don't care a hoot for the irreparable tarm they may have caused.
