A breakdown in company systems led to a Widnes tanker operator being fined several thousand pounds after a court was told of Speed limiter and tachograph offences.

Chester magistrates heard how the Vehicle Inspectorate had launched an investigation into Gussion Transport after one of its lorries was spotted speeding on the motorway.

The company pleaded guilty to 37 offences of using vehicles when the speed limiter was not controlling the maximum speed and two offences of using a vehicle when there had been an unauthorised withdrawal of the tachograph chart.

The firm, which also admitted two offences of using a vehicle when the centre field details of a chart were not completed, was fined £6,000 with 1285 costs.

David James, prosecuting for the Vehicle Inspectorate, told the magistrates that Gussion, which operated 30 vehicles and 30 trailers, was involved in carrying hazardous and nonhazardous chemicals.

A check on the com pany's tachograph records revealed a series of speed limiter problems involving two drivers.

One of them had also been entering false start and finish points on his tachograph charts to enable him to get home.

Charles Stansfield, defending, said the offences had arisen through a lack of awareness because of a breakdown in company systems.

The driver who had falsified his tachograph records had been dismissed and the other driver, along with the person who was responsible for checking the tachograpl records, had been giver written warnings.

Stansfield added that thi company was now sending itr tachograph charts for outsidi analysis.
