Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A MORI poll has shown that just 8% of vehicle fleets use any form of remote tracking, data capture or other telematles technology, arid the figure is even lower for small fleets.

The survey, commissioned by fleet management firm Fleetstar (part of the TrafficMaster group), covered car and van fleets as well as HGVs. It found that Just 3% of the small HU fleets (those with 1-19 vehicles) used telematics, though the figure was much higher (24%) for fleets of 20 trucks or more. A similar trend was evident in fleets of vans: only larger fleets (100-plus vans) were likely to use a tracking or communications system, and even there the take-up was only 17%.

According to Fleetstar chief executive Chris Haynes, the user profile of systems such as Fleetstar is broad: "it's right across a whole spectrum, but there is a trend towards users in service industries and wholesale manufacturing." But he has been surprised by the results of the survey: "My main concern was the size of the education process that we have to go through."

Haynes is planning a further study, to be undertaken by Cratifield Centre for Logistics and Transportation, which will look at how firms can be persuaded that fleet management and telematics systems will save more money than they cost: "A lot of fleet managers clearly find it difficult to comprehend exactly how useful these systems could be to their business, so it's up to us to convince them."
