Il Maintenance problems have led to the licence held by CKM (Civil Engineering Contractors) being cut from 12 vehicles to eight, and the duration reduced so that it expires at the end of February 1991.

The Eccles-based company appeared at disciplinary proceedings before North Western Deputy Licensing Authority John Levin.

Department of Transport vehicle examiner Graham Williams said that after a prohibition notice had been issued at a roadside check, he examined seven vehicles, and issued three immediate and two delayed prohibitions for a total of 28 defects.

For the company, it was said that the situation had been caused by a number of factors. A contract was obtained in 1988 which gave rise to major problems over access to the site. That led to penalties being imposed. The fleet had to be increased to 10 to meet the contract. Employees realised there was a difficult time ahead, and a number left. That resulted in two fitters having to deal with an increasing fleet.
