COACH operators and a coach dealer are to appear at Newport Crown Court next Monday charged with offences relating to the alleged misappropriation of bus grant. It is understood that the hearing could last until Christmas and that it is being treated as a test case.

Further prosecutions are Possible elsewhere if those Presently accused are con'detect. The charges in this irst case are thought to have Peen brought as a result of nvestigations co-ordinated py the West Midlands egional crime squad.

It is understood that the charges relate to the payment of bus grants on new vehicles and cover a number of years. When operators claim the grant — now running at 50 per cent of the price of a new vehicle — they have to show what price they actually paid for a vehicle (that is, after any discounts have been deducted). To prove the figure they must submit to the DoE a certificate from the dealer.
