approved by . delegates at the Road Haulage Association's annual conference at ROthesay last week.

Two motions calling for the use of all constitutional means to combat the threat of renationalization of longdistance road haulage and urging the Government to discontinue their policy of discriminating unfairly against road transport and in favour of the railways, have gone to the chairman's committee.

The executive committee are acting on the resolution calling for road facilities in the "projected Channel Tunnel.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer and Minister Of Transport have been told of delegates' belief that a larger part of the money raised from commercialvehicle taxation should be used on the roads. Another resolution to go to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, as well as to the National Road Transport Federation, called for the abolition of purchase tax on commercial vehicles.

A proposal that all gas oil not subject to taxation should be coloured has been passed to the Minister of Power. The Minister of Transport, the Secretary of. State for Scotland and the N.RT.F. have been told of the delegates' wish that the Government should assume special powers to speed up road con struction as a national emergency and to announce a five-year plan for the completion of an adequate system of urban and rural motorways.

A motion that objections to the renewal or transfer of licences should be confined to cases in which an operator had not maintained his vehicles properly, had underpaid and overworked his drivers, or failed to observe the conditions of B licences, has been passed to the Association's licensing committee.

A resolution deplOring the lack of efficiency of modern braking systems, and calling for all prototypes of new commercial vehicles to be submitted to the Ministry of Transport for approval, is to be considered by the R.H.A. vehicles committee.

Area committees are to be asked for their views on a proposal that oply Aand B-licence holders should be members of the Association and that honorary membership should be confined to retired or ex-hauliers. This motion was not put to the delegates.

The last resolution on the order paper was also not considered, and has been referred to the national council. It was that efforts should be made to reduce the burden on members serving on committees and to promote efficiency in the Association.
