Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FEW branches of repair work have grown so rapidly and have attained such successful results as has welding. The day of the botcher

has departed. In his place we have concerns which have adopted thoroughly scientific methods, and use up-to-date appliances combined with a profound chemical knowledge of the materials employed in welding work, and of those used in the construction of the various parts of a motor vehicle.

Much of the work undertaken is now guaranteed, and those who submit articles for repair by welding can rest assured that only the beat work will be

put into the job. %Vetoers who have won reputations for sound work are always willing to give expert advice as to the possibility or otherwise of repairing any article. It does not pay them to undertake work which they know will prove unsatisfactory, either immediately or after a short period of use, but there are few parts of a motor vehicle which cannot be subjected to the welding process without success. Cylinders, crankcases, crankshafts, gearboxes, chassis frames, steel mudguards, steam wagon fireboxes and cylinders, boilers and castings in almost all kinds of metals can not only be repaired. but can actu

ally be built up by the use of small castings where pieces have been last. " The motor vehicle user need seldom

despair. What might appear a hopelessly damaged part may quite possibly come well within the province of the welder, and be turned out almost as good as new at something like a quarter or half of the cost of a replacement part.

Doubts are sometimes cast on the strength of welds. Asa matter of fact, the weld is often actually stronger than the original metal, and crankshafts which have been repaired by reliable welders have stood the test of many years of service.
