Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An owner-driver of a certain light lorry had the 'misfortune to break up the differential of his vehicle the morning before that on which he had undertaken to do some very important work. He called in the assistance of a local engineering firm and stated that he must have the vehicle repaired the same day. He was informed that this would be quite impossible, but, on his insisting, the firm agreed to do what they could. Upon an examination being made it was found that the small differential pinions had smashed and, as no others were available, the whole differential casing was filled in solid with lead and white metal. The job was completed several hours before the time stipulated, and the delighted owner drove away quite satisfied ; he returned some weeks after and, calling the manager, said :— " say, that's a good job you made of my axle. Why, it has been quieter than it had ever been before. I'm going to send you all my work in future."
