I COULD not agree more with the letter from Barry Tozer (CM 11 November). I operate a mixed fleet of large crane-equipped trucks and artics operating throughout Europe. As responsible operators, we should not be sending drivers out without a basic understanding of the law and a certain level of skill to enable them to do the job that we are asking them to do.
Operationally, the job is hard enough to manage without sending incompetent drivers out. The hest drivers I have are the ones that started on 7.5-tormers and have worked their way up. No amount of sitting in a classroom listening to instructors who know less than them will make any difference. Moreover, it is the under-pressure operators that have to foot the bill for this unnecessary training. James Cooke
