Strikes continue at Lynx as talks with the T&G bog down. Chris Tindall reports.

AS CM went to press, drivers for parcels firm Lynx were resigned to two further days of strikes this week, after talks collapsed between the company and theTransport and General Workers Union.

A 48-hour strike was due to start on Wednesday (24 November) as the dispute over pay and hours rumbles on.

The action follows strikes earlier this month, which the T&G say were particularly well supported in Scotland and even disrupted Lynx's Nuneaton hub as they spread across its UK operations. It refutes claims by the company that the dispute is isolated and not affecting company operations. This is a national dispute up and down the country," says a T&G spokesman. "It's true the impact will vary, but crucially in Scotland very little moved and the Nuneaton hub operation was affected by the strike."

The spokesman adds that further disruption was caused when the union was forced to explain to local agencies that the dispute was lawful and they would be reported to the Department for Trade and Industry unless they withdrew drivers.

The union claims an overwhelming 86% of members rejected the 4% pay offer and says the offer will do nothing to reduce the working week for drivers ahead of the Working Time Directive (CM 4 November). However, the Rail. Maritime and Transport union, which recommended the offer to its members at Lynx, maintains that it sees no grounds for dispute.

A Lynx spokesman would not comment while discussions with the T&G continue.
