The Eco-Ljnk rig is the brainchild of Dick Denby. It's based on an Australianstyle "B-Double" combination in which a three-axle tractor pulls a short "A" or "interlink" trailer with a fifth wheel over its bogie. The bogies connected to a standard 13.6m tri-axle "B" trailer, creating a rig just over 25m long.

What makes the Denby Double special is that both axles on the front trailer steer allowing it to meet normal HGV turning-circle regs. At 60 tonnes COW it hauls a payload of over 37.3 tonnes-32% more than a conventional 44-tonner. With a 7.8m box body on the interlink trailer its volume of 144m3 is 56.5% better than the 92m3 six-axle artic used in the test. Being able to haul 14 more pallets in its short A-trailer, the Eco-Link rig provides a 53.8% improvement over the 26 standard pallets in a 13.6m semi-trailer.

Denby has applied for an exemption permit to run the Eco-Link on a short delivery operation on local roads in Lincolnshire. However, the DfT has responded by insisting on extra data on its braking and safety performance (for full technical description on the Denby Double see CM3 June). Several Scandinavian countries and Holland already permit heavier units for certain applications.
