CUMBRIA TRUCK CENTRE

"The Cummins 405 is what everybody wants"

RICHARD BERRY

Richard Berry is managing director of Foden franchisee Cumbria Truck Centre of Carlisle and Birmingham Trucks. He holds a mixed stock of about 55 used Scanias, Volvos and Oafs and has been buying up virtually every Foden Alpha that has come his way.

"To begin with the 380hp models were the most popular but that has changed now and the Cummins 405 is what everybody wants," he reports. "in the used market Cummins models are fetching around £2,000 more than the Oaf. Operators like the relative simplicity of the range. Since the Cummins M11 got its Pollution Certificate the price gap has grown even bigger. The Caterpillar model is selling for about the same as the Oaf 85.

"Compared with some other more expensive makes the values are holding up very well," he adds. "A 10-month-old 6x2 factory demonstrator will sell at £48,000, but the 4x2 models are suffering in line with all other 4x2s and might only fetch £39,000. The 405hp M11 engine puts another £1,500 on the price.
