Customs officers are still trying to track the drug dealers behind the consignment of drugs—with a street value of some £250,000—which was discovered last Sunday while Tesco staff unpacked for the day's trading.

The load had originated in Germany; having crossed the Channel it was delivered to 10 stores in the South-East, via Tesco's regional distribution centre at Snodiand. A Tesco spokesman says the packages were found by staff in between the boxes of strudel. They raised the alarm and the police were called in immediatel}c The strudel was not contaminated and the drugs did not get onto the shelves.

Investigators hope to discover how the gang were going to collect the drugs.

A Customs spokesman says: "This is obviously a smuggling operation which has gone wrong."

Neither Tesco nor Customs will say which haulier brought the strudel into the country.
