LONDONERS may see on every hand evidences of the progress of the £40,000,000 New Works programme for improving London's transport. There will be an effective fusion of the tubes and the suburban branches of the main line railways. With the coming of London Transport, a financial unity was established for all these services. Without it no such programme could have been contemplated.

These works are being rapidly pushed to a conclusion. By the end of 1940, important sections of the London and North Eastern Railway Company's suburban lines in North and Northeast London will have been electrified and linked with the tube railways. This will give direct access, by fast and regular services of electric trains, to the City and West End. Additional electrified lines on the Great Western Railway from North Acton to Denham will provide similar facilities on the west side of London. On the north-west, the Metropolitan Line will also be linked by tube with the West End. Travel to and across London will be simplified: there will be no changing or re-booking. Central London stations will have been reconstructed to cope with the additional traffic from the new extensions. New rolling stock of improved design, increased passenger capacity and greater acceleration will be in service.

On the roads the days of the tram are-numbered. Already nearly zoo miles of the 327 miles of tramways taken over by London Transport in 1933 have been converted to trolleybus operation.

Co-operative planning has replaced sterile competition.
