Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FOR the first time since 1922, the American National Motor Truck Show was held in New York. There were only 100 exhibitors.

For ahnost 11 years American manufacturers have been experimenting with the oil engine. But now it seems that the difficulties met with in evolving a unit of the right size, weight and price and in eliminating knocking, smoking and difficult starting, have been overcome.

The widest range of oilers was offered by the General Motors concern, which has introduced 12 new models. A notable feature of these General Motors units is the high ratio of torque to displacement-308-350 lb.-ft. on the four-cylindered 284 cubic-in. model.

Many Makers of Oilers.

The Dodge, Diamond-T, Autocar, International, Ford and Mack companies also exhibited oil-engined vehicles. Dodge. Roo and Mack trucks are powered by engines of Buda-Lanova design; in the case of the Mack trucks, the power units being made in the chassis builder's own works.

Of the proprietary engine manufacturers, the Cummins, Hercules, Waukesha-llesselma.n and Buda-Lanova concerns all exhibited a range of oil units.

Of these, the first-named is of particular interest, because of its controlled injection system. This exclusive feature comprises a single-plunger, lowpressure pump that measures the fuel charge for each cylinder. Once measured, the charges are distributed to the appropriate cylinders by a revolving distributor. In the injector, the fuel is suspended in a thimble-like cup, where it mingles with hot air forced up from the combustion chamber. At the moment of injection, the plunger, operated by a cam and rocker arm, forces the gasified fuel into the combustion chamber.

In its first stage, this system represents the application of the electric

ignition principle to the oil engine and it insures an accurately measured charge. In the injection stage, there is complete mechanical control through the shape of the cam. The whole system does away with excessively high pressures and detonation, whilst affording the flexibility of the petrol engine.

Replacement Oil-engine Units.

A further development was found in Hercules and Buda exhibits. The maker of the former is manufacturing a replacement oil engine for all Ford V8 lorries for the years 1935-1939; it is identical in dimensions with the Ford unit, so that no alteration is necessary to the chassis, frame or dashboard to effect a change-over. The Buda companylikewise offers a Ford V8 conversion unit which can be installed instead of the petrol engine.

An unusual vehicle exhibit was the Couse "mobile airport." This is a large six-wheeler based on a Ford V8 chassis and designed to service aeroplanes in time of war. It carries a complete machine shop, two-way radio, batteries of lights powered by a removable generator, derrick, and . -special steel tracks for traversing rough country. It will be able to move with front-line troops and -has a maximum speed of 45 m.p.h. on good roads.
