Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Biblis Auto-Basculeur, which is Operated by a Slight Forward or Rearward Movement of the Vehicle Itself,

ANEW farm of loading gear for lorries has just been produced in France of a type which appears very useful. Known as the Auto-Basculeur, the appliance provides a means of raising heavy and awkward loads from the ground to the level, of the lorry platform, the power employed in the operation being simply the tractive force of the lorry itself.

.? The lifting gear consists of what looks like a very substantial sledge carried at the extremity of jointed steel girders. The runners of this sledge-shaped lever or hoist are deeply serrated on their under faces, and their function is exactly the reverse of that of sledge runners. It is simply by their adhesion to the ground, as the lorry is moved slowly forwards, that the load is raised.

The working of the gear may be followed from the accompanying diagrams. In Fig. 1 the gear is in the lowered position, the load (shown dotted) having been pushed Or rolled on to the tail por tion of the sledge-shaped hoist. The lorry is then put into first gear and allowed to move gently forwards. As a result, the jointed girders begin to straighten out and the sledge tips up, lifting the load with it, as shown in Fig. 2. In Fig 3 the load has reached the level of the lorry Platform, the vehicle has been stopped, and the load is being pushed forwards on to it.

The gear is permanently attached to the lorry, and, when travelling it is folded forwards over the load.

[Our French correspondent, who wit .: _ _ .

nessed the demonstration of this hoist, does not go farther into the question of this disposal of the apparatus when not. in use It seems as if there would be considerable weight in the structure, making this the most difficult and awkward part of its. employment, but We think our correspondent would have dealt with this point had it seemed to present a difficulty.—Eo. C.M.] The method of unloading is exactly the reverse of the first process. The gear is extended, the load pushed out on TO it, and the vehicle then gently backed until the goods reach ground level.

It is claimed that the apparatus worlgs equally well on all surfaces. Loads of over a ton in weight have been loaded and discharged on muddy ground, greasy pave and wood paving without any apparent tendency to slip.

The. Auto-Basculeur would appear to be exceptionally suited to objects which

are capable of being rolled, such as heavy barrels, drums of cable, etc., but, at the same time, the most awkward objects can be safely handled with it. It is made by Messrs. &harms et Biblis, Bayonne, Basses Pyrenees, France, to whom inquiries may -be addressed, •
