Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Rim, Polishing, Wheel, Shrapnel

The" Panties " Spring Wheel.

On the stand of the Sirdar Rubber Co., at Olympia last week, we were interested to examine one of the latest patterns of that spring road-wheel, which is known as the " Panflex," and which is the invention of the Hon. R. C. Parsons, of turbine fame. We reproduce photographs, on this page. which are self-explanatory. The principal fen

ture of interest in this wheel is the arrangement of internally-corrugated rim, with which the rubber-faced spring caps engage, in such a manner that creeping between the rim and the wheel-centre is not only permitted but encouraged. The action of the wheel may be described as the walking of the spiral spring feet inside the outer rim, which, it is claimed, is effected without noise or friction.

Polishing and Plating.

During a recent visit to 'Randall's "radiator hospital," at Green Street Works, Paddington Green, we were interested to note that considerable extensions had been made in order to accommodate further shop equipment. New plant has been laid down, which now enables Mr. Randall to undertake polishing and plating on the premises. Hitherto it has been necessary to have this work done outside; a fact which has not enabled him always to deal as expeditiously with urgent orders as he would have wished. A speciality has, for some time past, been made of the manufacture of mud wings, bonnets and other fittings for motorcabs, and in this connection it is interest ing to note that a very large order has. just been completed for Messrs. W. and G. du Oros far their Napier cabs, and another 500 sets have recently been placed in hand for the new Panhards which are now making their appearance on the London streets.

"Shrapnel" Splashguards.

We learn that M. Maurioe van der Voort, of 12, Rue du Gazinnetre, Brussels, has taken up the sole agency for Belgium, Holland, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for the " Shrapnel " splashguard. This device, in its improved form, is lighter. cheaper, more easily fitted and more durable than most people would have thought pos...ible of achievementInstead of being mounted on the journal inside the huh cab, a small hole is now drilled and tapped in the cap itself, and the guard is mounted by means of a light ball bearing on a stud. It is therefore a matter of only a few seconds to remove the splashguard at any time_ Another important improvement is found in the matter of the mesh used, and this most of all concerns the quick removal of the bottom strands, which may suffer wear through frictional contact with the road ; this is illustrated by the accompanying views. The cost of renewal of mesh, for 5,000 miles of running, ahould practically never exceed Is. per wheel. The restraining springs between the splashgnard and the ordinary mudguard cost only 71d, each.
