Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Colin Barnett A dual-fuel system simultaneously running on diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is now available from Zone 1 (LPG/Diesel Technology) of Daventry, which claims fuel savings of up to 18% with up to 20% more power and torque.

The system is available for most current diesel engines, but Zone 1 is targeting the heavier end of the market where the potential savings are greatest.

The cost varies from £1,995£2,745 (ex-VAT) depending on installation and tankage requirements—the LPG tank volume must be at least 25% the capacity of the diesel tank. The installation is covered by a 12month warranty.

In tests a Cummins B-Seriespowered Daf 45 160 run by Fast Freight of Lincolnshire Research Association has confirmed fuel savings of up to 16.2% running an R-reg Scania 124L 360.

The Scania was also tested on a chassis dynamometer by independent specialist Feather Diesel, and the dual-fuel setup produced significant improvements in power, torque and also in specific fuel consumption (see table).

CM hopes to be testing the Zone 1 system in the near future.
